If you wanted you could also just put the shock cord through two holes appropriately spaced then tie the shock cord into a loop, and you'd have twice the strength I guess? Sort of a bad example b/c the holes the shock cord run through are too far apart, but I just threw this together to illustrate what I was talking about.

That's pretty cool, Red. The whole reason I tried to splice the shock cord is to do away with knots. My current "in use" tensioners are just hair elastics clove hitched on, and they are constantly snagging on each other and getting tangled, so I was going for a more streamlined approach.

Nice Ace! You're on to something here (like a sleepless night). I'll be up all night waiting on the pics.

That's been my experience with knots, too.

What if you didn't use a big knot? I'm thinking maybe you could open up a hole in the zing-it, like before, but instead of putting the shock cord through the hole you could tie the shock cord to the zing-it with a double constrictor knot tied through the hole and around the shock cord??? Might work... might not, but also still not snag free.
    Bad diagram:
    -----0-----0----- Zing-it with 2 holes .
..ll......ll.. Shock cord parallel to and constricted (2 vert. lines) the zing it.
On second thought this might be a bad idea?
    Good luck,

And as promised, since RF needs his beauty sleep, here's some pictures.

And since I can't splice my used 1.75, imagine that instead of a double overhand, the line just goes around back in a continuous loop that's completely buried, except for the 2 ends.
I yanked on it a bunch before I tied the knot, and I'm not even sure it needs that. A drop of super glue might be sufficient.

    Enjoy,
    Acer
Oh, and the elastic is a 2.5" hair band, for reference.

I have been wandering about those hair bands myself. My wife has a ton of those just laying around. I just hadn't figured out how to attach it to the main line. Now I have. I guess I still don't know if it has enough pull on the bands though to be really any good.
Have you tried them out to see if the bands would hold up to actually keeping a tarp taut?
