I was thinking of doing something like this for the tensioner except I hadn't thought enough ahead to see the slipping issue of the shock cord. I really like the idea of wrapping the excess around the shock cord. Nice and neat. Awesome implementation! I would like to see how they hold up for the long term.

It appears to me that this is a case where the stitching would be load bearing...am I right?

You are correct. The shock cord shrinks enough under tension that it will slip without the stitching. I use a thread from paracord and it seems to hold well enough.

Reviving an old thread, i realize... just wondering how this has held up for you. I'm in the process of making some of these (or some variation) and am collecting as much info as possible.

How much stretch does this rig give? Is it enough to keep the tarp tight?

... i don't even know how much the tarp will sag over the course of the night...

Thanks for posting the details... looks like this has alot of potential!

The tarp is up in it's snakeskins right now, but the amount of stretch is about the same as any other way of attaching that amount of shock cord. I'm working up some new ways of attaching the shock cord so that the stitching isn't necessary, and I'll try to get some pictures up tonight.

I was playing with this last night a little and I just opened a hole in the zing-it with a small awl, then passed the shock cord through the hole and tied an overhand knot in the shock cord, then did it again at an appropriate interval for the length of shock cord. When you pull on the zing-it it pretty much closes up around the shock cord. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, and no sewing. I did it both wrapped and unwrapped (line around the shock cord that is). May send some pix soon.
    Good luck,

I'm still using the ones I made with Dynaglide and 3/32" shockcord. The stitching has held up well. I've occasionally wondered about ways to double the shock cord to get more tension, but I'm not really sure it's needed. I just got used to more tension on my old STLs that used loops of 1/8" shockcord.

Just got some Zing-it and made guylines with Penberthy knots at the tie-out points. I'll try adding 1/8" shock cords near the stake ends using Red's technique.
