    Sewing machine

Hi all, I want to make my own gear; ie hammock, tarp, under quilt(s) etc. I need to get a sewing machine but I don't know what to look for when shopping. From the research I've done I know I want a rolling hem foot, but what should I look for to make my beginner skills look good? Can I get away with using a $80 Brother 14 stitch SM1400?

    Thanks.
    George

Ya, something like that should do fine. Don't need many stitch options. And brother should have plenty of foot options for ha

If you are just starting out don’t worry about attachments IMO. Get a decent home machine either new or old and work on becoming proficient with the straight stitch and the machine in general. You can make pretty much any gear with only a straight stitch so if you come across an old machine in a thrift store or from a family member that only has a straight stitch and no attachments, don’t overlook it. You can do a rolled hem without a special foot.

This is great advice, there are many great starter machines, you dont need a million and one different types of stitches, just the basics. A brother or singer would be perfect.

I got an inexpensive Brother off Amazon a few years ago and it's great. I use straight stitch, zig zag, and bartack stitch on it and it does fine.

Put that $80 Brother to work! Like most jobs, there is always a specific tool that will help make the job easier, faster, or better but they aren’t necessary for this stuff. Rolled hems are very easy to do with a standard presser foot. Take your time, ask questions, and when you’re done enjoy the fruits of your labor. It’s awesome having something to show off when you’re done.

I've been making nearly all my gear for over a decade with a basic Brother from Wallyworld. About $50 or so back then. It has few stitches, but I use only the strait stitch. Makes a racket while it's running, but it keeps on running. Sews everything from 0.6 oz nylon to polyester tree straps (reluctantly).

Would I love to have one of those old classic black Singers? You bet.

Thanks everyone. The inexpensive one it is then, especially since I may blow the motor using it on a transformer here in Saudi. Transformers seem to cycle the power even though I have a large 3000w unit. I've blown up 2 Keurigs so far.
