    Back yard setup

I'm going to be setting up some 12' 4x4's in my treeless back yard. I'll be using this setup to "fiddle" with my hammocks and tarp, try out new suspensions, practice knots, or just lollygag. How far apart would be optimal for this? I generally like a larger distance between trees for my Warbonnet XLC with webbing/buckle suspension but I want to be able to play with other hammocks and suspensions in the future. Should I just do a standard 15' or would you go somewhere closer to 20'?

Some 4x6 or 6x6 lumber would be preferable, but if you've already got 4x4s, consider adding a horizontal 2x cross brace at the top on each side to reduce the bending loads that can 4x4 posts to fail in some hammock applications. Good luck.

I'll do 6x6x12' then. No problem. How long across?

A bit smaller than your talking about but this works for me. 4x4s and 2x6s.

Nice! I've been thinking of how to work a place to hang in my yard, and I think this design will work well! Thanks for posting the pic!

I'd go no more than 15 feet. Somewhere between 12 and 15 would be my choice.

Just guessing, but is that a short hammock on about 10.5' spacing?

Yes, just my napping hammock. Spacing is 11' center to center on the 4x4s. Just barely fits my summer tarp that I put up on rare occasions.
