Waking up to 450# racoons climbing over your backyard fence can be a bit exciting. But I still hang in the back yard.

That looks like a bear.

Excellent photos. In Canada the bears come but they do not bother people who do not have food or try to pet them. Almost always Americans who get mauled. At least in our area.
Ironfish45, get a large size pepper spray and relax.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.
I’m not certain of your exact setup, but I live in a fairly suburban area right between Annapolis and Baltimore, MD. My yard is right at an acre with the last 50’ being wooded and butts against a golf course.
I hang at least one weekend a month regardless of weather. I don’t have to worry much about people coming thru the yard, but I do have a fair share of squirrels, foxes, and an occasional deer that will jump my fence.
I can understand if In a more urban setting, I might be a little more anxious as well. Animals, even wild ones, are a lot more predictable than people.

I hang in my backyard. Biggest problem is the traffic noise.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I sleep like the dead in my hammock. I feel no pain, I just totally zonk out.
After reading the comments, I really need to get a grip and let go of the boogie man is going to get me. LOL I would probably scare him with my voice coming from the trees.
When I was sleeping by the front door with the door open I chased people off the porch a few times.
I don't know. Very sound sleep, people doing things in the dark, I did not receive a clear answer on my questions about bear or pepper spray to protect myself from a crazy woman a few years ago. Air horns are legal, bear spray is questionable. Waking up enough to self protect is a definately a concern.

I say sit out back quietly with a few beers and get a feel for how it is at night. Eventually you'll feel more comfortable and have no worries.
