    Asym Tarp - Storm Stories

    Hi Everyone!

First, I am a weight weenie. There I said it.

I'm always looking to drop grams anywhere I can, & I'm thinking that a small asym tarp such as the MLD or the (now discontinued) Zpacks would fit the bill (any lighter ones I'm missing)?

This post is in request of storm stories! We've all been in that situation where the weather turns unexpectedly, & your kit is really put to the test. I'd love to hear some of these experiences involving asyms.

    Lighter? Definitely.

Got caught in a sudden thunderstorm last month with my DIY asym. Just barely got my tarp up, didn't even have time to get the hammock up. Spent 2 hours in pouring rain. Stayed pretty dry but was sure wishing I had my Superfly. Had the storm come up in the middle of the night, I'm not sure it would have kept me dry. However, I'll still take it when needing to cut weight.

Everybody's got their stories - asym fans will tell you that if you practice good site selection, and hunker that tarp down really low, you can weather anything. Been there, done that - not gonna do it again. Asym tarps are not for me.

I now use a 4-season tarp with doors almost exclusively - haven't been wet since I started using my HG Winter Palace about six years ago. It's 8.6 ounces - probably lighter than most asym tarps.

Don't mind me, though. Kitsapcowboy will be along shortly to sing the praises of asym tarps!

To the contrary. Asym tarps suck. Everyone knows you should get a Dyneema Palace, a PolyD netless with a Fronkey bug net, and matched sets of Hammock Gear quilts in 0F, 20F, and 40F. If you don't camp like that, you're doing it wrong...

I think a Superfly would probably be a good start. You don't need to spend money on a cuben fiber tarp to stay dry!

    Asym Tarp - Storm Stories

I always loved the idea of asym tarps, but ultimately using these tarps depends on the weather. I wouldn't be able to provide a storm story because I wouldn't have brought the asym with the possibility of a storm.

Touche' Cowboy! I can agree with Silver Surfer about complete coverage though. I prefer more coverage, but then again, I mostly car camp, and am not an uber light camper yet. One day I may, but for now my skin out weight is usually around 25-28 lbs for a 3 day/night weekend overnight camping trip.

I have stayed dry during low-wind, NON-blowing rain in an asym. That said, I have been in the sudden, serious storms before that got my UQ wet so I prefer more coverage. Other than the obvious disadvantage (price), the only other negative I have noticed with my HG Palace is the larger pack volume. I live with that because of the superior coverage it provides at minimal weight.

Cowboy's modified asym tarps look awesome though.

I've been thru 2 or 3 downpours with my HG Asym and stayed dry but it wasn't windy. If there's the slightest chance of wind & rain I bring my Palace. Even if the forecast is for no rain but windy and cool I bring the Palace.
