Worst night sounds I ever heard were in my backyard. Kind of expect to hear stuff in the woods and know that its some animal, right? But to hear a screaming monkey in your semi-urban backyard just really freaked me out. Come to understand its probably an owl.

Yea sounds in the night. Getting back to nature is so cool. There is nothing in the Ohio woods you need to be truly afraid of than is not on 2 legs. Even the odd eastern black bears are really over sized raccoons. Practice good camp hygiene is 99%. The reason it was snorting is because it was scared of you. Had a pack of coyotes howling with in 30 yards me in April,. that was a new experience. Hope this all come out as a positive for you.
Similar to Dakotaross, the worst encounter I have had with an animal while sleeping outside was in my backyard in Atlanta. It was a very aggressive coyote that would not go away.
But in the north Georgia mountains where I typically camp and hike, it is an entirely different story. Animals are much more afraid of you than you should be of them which is why you will almost never see an animal in the forest. I had a lady who had been on the AT for a week tell me she hadn't even so much as seen a squirrel yet on the trail.
I have heard more animal sounds at night than anything else. After weeks and weeks of camping outdoors, they no longer bother me.
It is really just a matter of perception. Things began to change for me when a multi-time thru hiker told me he has zero fear of bears and sleeps nightly with his food under his head.
The second changing event for me was on the Foothills Trail hike when my shuttle driver, Jim Simpson, told me not to fear the animals as in his words he said, "Animals are your friend." And for snakes, "If you don't mess with them, they won't mess with you."
Once you view animals in a new perspective, your fear of them will soon go away.
I wouldnt stress it.
I was night hiking to meet some members here last weekend and I realized this distant holler I was hearing was some petrified guy screaming who's out there. Funny and sad. I told him, "hikers" given it's a public trail in a public park... and it put him at peace.
There's sounds in woods at night.

He hasn't responded yet, I think the snorting beast got him. Hanger down in sector 7. RIP
Ive been scared twice, once in my backyard when 2 cats started fighting near by. Pretty scary till I figured out what it was, they were going at it pretty good. Once in the woods when I was woken by something sniffing my ear. When I jumped, that thing was gone. couldn't tell u what it was, but man it scared the crap out of me.
The woods can be a scary place. Don't forget your bear-defense techniques. Be prepared!
