Spring last year I was camping in the foothills near my home, hanging in a nice little isolated clump of trees. Just after I drifted off to sleep at night, I woke up to this sound that I thought for sure was announcing the end of my days on earth. I got my light on, and myself out of the hammock. After a moment of searching I saw 2 turkey vultures about 25-30 feet from my trees, and they were hissing and flapping their gigantic wings at me, obviously very displeased. I gave them a few minutes so I could try and figure out what was going on, and best I could tell was that maybe Mommy and Daddy had come home and were trying to protect a nest.
I just packed up and left; it was only 30 minutes or so to get home. There was no way to try and manage that through the night, and they were obviously upset with me.
Kinda sounded like the 'Juvenile Calls' in this link: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/...Vulture/sounds
LOL I think I'd need an extra change of underwear if I'd heard that in the middle of the night...
Yes happened to me at our family property
Was super hot so we slept outside on air mattress ( pre hammock era)
Was awoken by the creepiest animal noise ever ( for Michigan)
I screamed at it and shone my flashlight but didn’t see nothing
Was a deer I later figured out
Made me crawl out of my skin !
