referring to the "what knot" I mentioned....I'd say at least 50% of the slip renters at the marina where I work make their boats off with a "what knot".

As long as it works for them—-that’s great
I’m not a knot expert, I’m a hammock knot hobbyist. I had to look up “what knot” in ABOK,
I’d seen it before, but never tied it or the trick variants of this knot. Ashley notes there are some secure variants and some not so secure?
I’m left handed and one time I was trying to follow and tie a knot in Geoffrey Budworths Encyclopedia of Knots. The knot shown, in step by step color photographs, was right handed.
I could not figure it out backwards.
So I held it up to a mirror to tie it——-
When I lost my balance, I barely escaped with my life—-shards of glass were everywhere.
And that’s true....to the best of my recollection!
Phantom Grappler....I have Ashleys but it's put away in storage. Honestly, I didn't know he had one named that in his book.....the "what knot" I mention is a knot that isn't a knot.....it's what you get when someone who doesn't know any knots ties something.....it usually doesn't untie well....

Ashley described “what knot” , shaped like a granny knot except one end exits at top and other end exits at bottom of knot.
Then he showed a variation with both ends twisted or pulled so that while still being like a granny knot—with both loose ends pulled toward the bottom or one side.
He went on to show a trick version of “what knot” that allowed the knot to travel along the ropes as if by magic.
Then he made a minor change and the knot seized or locked up.
All this is beyond my ability to comprehend (without long time studying) I ain’t gonna do that
Though it’s still fun to notice.
I don’t think it’s a reliable knot for hammock campers because some versions are not secure or stable, and other versions with only minor changes hold better. Too easy for me to mess up and use one knot when I should have used it’s almost twin.
And “what knot” the turn of a phrase.

Running bowline, and if you are gonna tie a loop and run end through loop. An alpine butterfly loop will hold too and it resists jamming.
Lots of great ways to meet suspension challenges, and they most all work great.
You can go to a big hammock hang and see five dozen hammocks. And it’s rare to see multiple hammocks and tarps rigged in exactly the same way. It’s one of those things, you get to choose your own style and you are free to change just for fun.
