Fronkey bugnet with one wide end

Dutch has a nice tutorial for a Fronkey bugnet. Here's the main pic:

I'd like to modify one end to make a wider drawstring opening to allow me to slide that end of the bugnet over the hammock, underquilt, and topquilt. Here's my naive redesign in red:

Can anybody see a problem with this modification?

I did something similar. Instead of doing that though, I made the bugnet the normal shape, but I put a series of kam snaps down on side of the hammock as opposed to sewing is shut. It's worked for me so far. I can slide the entire thing on and off like a sleeve.

I think you are insane, haha. I have netting cut out with that one side open almost half-way down to accommodate sliding it over my underquilt and gear hammock. I haven't sewn it up yet, but I think it should be fine.

I think you have a good plan.

Kamsnaps, huh? Good timing, I just bought some, and the tool.

But will Kamsnaps create a good enough seal to keep the mosquitos out? I'm guessing "yes" but anybody know for sure?

Also, would you attach the Kamsnaps directly to the netting, or would reinforce the netting with some grosgrain first?

I've never had any issues with intruders. At the top near the ridgeline, I reinforce with grosgrain because there's more pressure applied at the point. along the rest of the edge, I just put them through the rolled hem. That area of the snaps is flush against the body of the hammock which keeps the bugs out.

If you can wait about 6 hours or so, I can snap a few pictures of mine when I get home.

    Thanks, I'd appreciate that.

Most folks who wish to modify it sew a zipper in. I used a 16" #3, but afterward wished it was 18-20".

The end doesn't need to be much bigger than a stuff sack. you'd be surprised how much bulk can fit through that 5" hole. My snugpak under blanket and 11' hammock go with no trouble at all. I didn't enlarge the hole but I did sew a channel for a cinch cord to seal it up. This cinch cord keeps it from sliding back over the hammock, which it will when you're moving around in the hammock.

If you do want to enlarge it I'd do something like this for simplicity.

Personally, I prefer to just leave my bugnet, underquilt, and hammock all together.
