Tarp Stakes

I was where you were a year or so ago. However, I've recently switched back to MSR stakes over hooks. I may still use the hooks in some situations, but I've had difficulty with them enough that I rest easier knowing that I can depend on the stakes.

I used Lawson Ti SH’s for several years exclusively but primarily use those for doors and take a couple for backup now. I switched to the V stakes like the ones Amok includes. I have ground hawks and Ti stakes the smurfs sell but I like how compact the stakes pack. The smalls are .4 oz. ea.

How do the groundhog minis work? I've been wondering.

I have no problems with them.

I added reflective micro cord tethers to all of my stakes.. About six inches long. Easier to pull the stakes and really easy to see. On the Ti hooks I used bright heat shrink tubing at the hook and captured the micro cord inside so it is secure. Pretty much permanent.

Here's one of the first Ti stakes I did as described... Later switched to Orange and yellow heat shrink once I confirmed it worked.

I used Lawson's Ti Shepherd hooks for a year or so and really like them in the right soil conditions. I've had them come out in real loose soil and I hate having to get up in the middle of the night to re-anchor my tarp.

That being said, I used Lawson's Apex stakes for the first time on my recent week long trip to the Boundary Waters. On my last night in the BWCA, a thunderstorm rolled in. My tarp stakes weren't anchored real deep because I was camping on a thin layer of sandy soil that covered the solid rock ground. I recall I could only anchor one of the stakes 1/4 of the way into the ground and the rest were driven in about 1/2 way. Anyway, the wind really whipped my tarp around that night but none of my stakes came loose at all. I was pretty impressed with the Apex stakes' performance and they're my go to stakes from now on.

I use mini groundhogs, had too many issues with the shepherds hook stakes coming out. Also got annoying trying to find rocks/branches to put on top of them on certain trails. I will sometimes carry 1-2 normal sized groundhogs if I know I'll be in particularly bad area.

Agree with this ^^^

I use the shepherd hooks for tarp doors.. not much more. The mini-ground hogs seem to tackle anything I come across in the NE.. if there is an issue, two stakes in series at that corner will usually solve it or a rock.
