    Thunderfly vs Mountainfly

I have pretty much decided I want one of these two tarps to fill the gap between my Edge and Cloudburst and to also give me something with partial doors.

So does anyone have experience with both of these and have a preference? I know what the differences are on paper from looking at Warbonnet’s website. I am curious about preferences and why.

I made a DIY hex tarp with half doors that's the same width as the Superfly and Mountainfly; for as light as it is, I personally would have no desire to delete a foot or more of width to save an extra ounce.

Whichever you choose, the half doors work great. The concept is a fantastic feature on any 11-foot hex.

So basically why sacrifice coverage to save an ounce of weight.

    Good point.

That said, there is really no "wrong" answer on a continuum of personal choice. Some people really do try to shave every last gram, although why they insist on a hex over an asym tarp escapes me if weight savings and pack size is the goal. Others like short sides on their tarps for the unrestricted views; they'll usually stay dry enough but may be subject to gusts of wind. HYOH, to be sure, but my own biases go against deleting that strip of fabric along the ground edges that gives you a nice amount of extra weather protection.

I'm debating the same question. I have been using the Edge in summer, and the Mamajamba for the rest of the time. While it's nice to have a lot of protection from the sides, I have hardly ever really needed it. I'll probably go with a Thunderfly for that reason.

I get it, and that's why it really does come down to personal preference IMHO, which mak it a good thing that Warbonnet now offers three different sizes of tarp with half doors.

In colder weather I like to stake my tarps down almost to (or directly to) the ground to combat wind and rain, so the extra tarp panel width translates to several inches of extra height at the ridge line and a couple of extra inches of available sit height, all of which makes entry/exit a little more convenient.

That's what I went with. The Mountainfly was too close to my Superfly. The minifly was a bit too short on the sides for my liking in porch mode. It's great to have these options!

I can't really speak for the Thunderfly, but I picked up a blem Mountainfly a couple of months ago. IMO, it's huge. It's the first tarp I've owned with doors, but I've never gotten cold or wet without doors. I can't really see myself ever needing more protection than the Mountainfly offers unless I move across the country. There is a ton of room under there, even when pitched lower. I don't have a pole mod, but the tarp was set up in the rain and my Ridgerunner fits under there with a lot of room to spare. I didn't pitch it incredibly tight, but I think it would be hard to run out of room.

I was originally aiming for a Thunderfly, but when I was shopping I saw that lower price on the blem Mountainfly and decided to give it a go. I think I'd be equally happy with a Thunderfly... the larger doors on the Mountainfly are nice but probably overkill for me personally. That said, I'll probably use my Mountainfly primarily as a winter or bad weather tarp and eventually I'll pick up a lighter hex tarp for insurance on fair-weather trips.

Decided to order the Mountainfly. Should pair nicely with my new DH Raven.

Lucky me WB has a July4 sale and the exact model I wanted was 15% off.

Looking forward to trying out my new gear
