Washington was incredible. Moving towards Maine soon. Hammocking is useful and challenging up in the whites. Lots of the moisture at +3000 feet is a dense cloud, and my down has gotten pretty wet some nights from it. I’ve started hanging my tarp as low as possible over the hammock for some more protection from the wind and sideways moisture.
Family members in the area meant I got a lot of support around the center of the Whites. I kind of miss the speed you could cover ground in the mid-Atlantic, but these views are awesome and seeing family is fun.
You've got clearer skies on Mt. Washington than I had last month. I wasn't so lucky finding hanging spots in the area, but suspect I'd need to hit the trails earlier to reach higher elevation.
And that’s a wrap! I got sick in Maine and made it a day into the 100MW before bailing near the Gulf Hagas. I wanted to hike the full half of the AT this summer, but I was just too ill to keep going after weeks of discomfort.
Oh well! I still had plenty of fun, and I can now do the southern half in the next few years before hitting my completion at Katahdihn. It was a clean 1,001.1 miles from PGF, PA to Gulf Hagas, ME.
Pic of me atop Pleasant, just before I saw a moose! I’ll have stories aplenty at the Fall MAHHA.
Final pic was just an example photo I took of how gritty this trail gets from NH onwards- I definitely got my share of scrambling in! The Pine Barrens are going to be strange to revisit, what with how flat they are!
I've really enjoyed the pictures of your quest. Get well soon.
Congrats on the 1000 miles. The terrain up there looks challenging.
Bummer. So close and then get sick. Get well soon and the trail will still be there when your ready.
The whites and Maine are far different from the rest of the AT. The wildcats then the first few days of Maine are brutal.
It sucks about your injury bud, you were practically at the red carpet.
Glad you had a good hike though and hammocked the whole way
