Ultralight, am I doing this right?

    Hey everyone!
Longtime hammock camper, but I've never tried to go ultralight with it.
But, I need to respect that I have almost no weight tolerance, so I'm turning into a gram weenie!

To start with, I've ordered 3 yards of Xenon 1.0 for a hammock, 2 UHMWPE straps, and 3 yards of Xenon Sil Wide for a tarp.
I know, of course, I could buy Cuben Fiber/Dyneema and go lighter, but I'm not made of money so that isn't a viable option.

Am I missing anything? Any suggestions for other ways to go lighter?

    A 3/4 or 2/3 underquilt? 10oz at the most.

3yds is SHORT for a hammock and for a tarp - unless the tarp is asym then probably ok.

Add an extra yard to the hammock unless you're tiny or you'll probably be uncomfortable.

Post your gear list and we'll help you go lighter all-around; and do so on a budget.

Whoops, it's actually 4 yards of Hexon for the Hammock. **** names are to close! I'll be able to post a full gear list when I get back from California next week, so that will have to wait.

If you're making a hammock out of only 3 yards of breathable fabric (I assume it's Hexon 1.0, not Xenon, which is waterproof) you'll be lucky if it finishes out at any more than 8.5 feet once you sew or whip the ends; that is a VERY short gathered-end hammock for almost any adult. Skimping on the length of your hammock isn't usually considered the best way to shave grams if it's going to cost you a good night's sleep for the entirety of your ownership of that hammock, especially when an extra 50 grams of fabric will get you a much more usable ultralight hammock at least 11 feet long.

You did nail the minimalist tarp thing, though. Running a simple perimeter hem around your 3-yard blank of Xenon Wide and sewing tie-outs to the corners will yield a very functional rectangular asym tarp for your gathered-end hammock, something I like to call the K.I.S.S. ("Keep It Super Simple") tarp, which will only weigh about 8 ounces, pack down super-small, and keep you quite dry in most conditions with a proper pitch.

Your hammock and tarp will barely weigh a pound if your follow that protocol.

You will probably want insect protection and some insulation for your sleep system, and you will need suspension for lightweight both components.

Wonderful! I do intend to use the tarp as an asym. I'll be using Whoopie Slings and Marlin Spikes for my suspension system with the straps.

Also, I wanted to try and do a no-sewing tarp, using Seam Seal to get my hems and attach my tie-outs. Do you have any experience with doing something like that?

No. Go for it if that sounds good to you, and start a thread in the DIY forum to document your project and let us know how that works out.

Many thanks, Halfed. That was my original K.I.S.S. tarp prototype over my very first 1.0 oz ultralight hammock, and it was a sweet setup; those are in the hands of a friend back east now, and upon last report they are still going strong.

My current 6x9 K.I.S.S. tarps (Version 2.2) have midpoint tie-outs for additional ground pitches for just a few grams more pack weight.
