Agreed, the key is learning to do it correctly!

I settled on some by Black Diamond that are 1oz each.
OK, I didn't realize that climbing biners have gotten quite that light... 20kN for 1oz is pretty amazing. l was weighing some of my old standard biners and deducting a bit for wires. Even so, they still weigh more than 0!.

I just switched over to toggles. I like the idea of carabiners instead. I may try that next time I set up. Thanks for the idea.

    Toggles ain't exactly rocket science.

If you're worried they won't hold, you can larkshead the CL or whoopie behind the knot. Totally foolproof, rock solid.

Carabiner instead of a toggle to hold a marlinspike hitch?

I used a stick the diameter of my thumb i found lying around the campsite. make sure the suspension rests on the knot , not the toggle!

    Sticks are fine.

However when I was using toggles I preferred the Ti for a couple of reasons... If somehow the loop did end up on the "shoulder" of the knot, the toggle itself still wouldn't break so there's a margin for error, and in the winter it was much easier to remove if it was wet/frozen.

But the list of things that can be used as a toggle is virtually endless... heck, a toothbrush handle will work.

I was first using fancy wood toggles I made, then went to carbon fiber arrow shafts, then realized I could use a biner as a toggle like cmoulder's pic #1, then someone suggested pic #2. I go back and forth between all four methods depending on my mood and all work just fine I will report!

Yeah I wouldn’t play around with a Walmart Biner using some Chinese 1080 or 1095 steel. Make sure it’s actually weight rated. There are some bumps in the night I can live with, the bump after a fall isn’t one of them

If the 'biner is used as a toggle and the CL or Whoopie is still hung on the knot (not clipped into the 'biner), it can be a pretty cheap 'biner!

I would add... As long as the inadequate 'biner' does not look like a climbing biner. It is worth it to me to have a stronger biner, just in case I need it, if I am going to have one.
