Carabiner instead of a toggle to hold a marlinspike hitch?

Is there any chance that a marlinspike hitch would come apart if I just went from the carabiner on the end of the hammock to the loop of the marlinspike hitch on the tree strap?

Thank you. I didn't think it would be a problem.

How is the carabiner attached to the hammock? Does the carabiner run through the sewn channels of the hammock, or is there CL on the hammock?

If there is a CL—or if there's a carabiner, which you can replace with a CL—you can eliminate the carabiner altogether and use a Becket hitch or J-Bend.

I have soft shackles running through the sewn channels.

Would the carabiner be in contact with the toggle? I can’t see the carabiner sitting on the knot only exerting pressure on it and not the actual toggle.

It will absolutely work. Just be sure to use a quality climbing rated biner without any sharp edges. Another option to consider is using a daisy chain style strap instead. Dutch’s Daisy straps are pretty light and a great option. But using a biner as a a toggle is actually more secure than a conventional straight toggle because the toggle can’t slip out and the loop or whoopie you attach to it also can’t slip off. And you don’t have any concerns about whether you are resting on the knot or the toggle. So it’s a more foolproof way to go. And you get to multipurpose biners to use throughout the day as a bonus. So for a minor weight penalty over toggles, biners are a worthy option, I think.

Do you mean like this? MSH_carabiner_01.jpg If so, almost anything will work as a toggle.

Like this MSH_carabiner_02.jpg will work. But this MSH_carabiner_03.jpg (J-Bend) works just as well.

Picture 2 is what I had in mind with a wire gate biner.
