    3-season underquilt for the smokies?

What are your thoughts about a 3-season underquilt? full-length or torso-length, what temp rating for the Smokies.

Even in the fall in the smokies it drops to 30s and 40s at night. I would want it rated at least down to there. Full would be my preference

High elevation in the Spring/Fall? I'd consider a full length 20 degree quilt. It's pretty versatile. Maybe a 30 if you're feeling like pushing the limits.

I use an HG 20* 3/4 Phoenix for temps 30* and above. I subscribe to the 10* buffer rule - use a quilt rated at least 10* below the expected low temps. When temps are 30* or below, I usually use a full length HG 0* Incubator.

I think a 20* 3/4 length would be a good fit. I use a 3/4 UQ to save volume in my pack.

Ive camped several times around 2500' in the 30's there. 30 degree quilt kept me warm. I always have wool thermals and a wool or down
hat to sleep in though. My son and I were there this week and He used the 30 degree quilt. I believe it dipped into mid 40's during the cool snap Tuesday. My 3 season choice would be the 30 degree. I usually have a down jacket and helium to throw on if I get chilled so Im not concerned about dipping into high 20s.

Good information, thanks all, leaning toward a 20* 3/4 lots of good options.

For me a 3/4 20deg EE Revolt actually works at 20°F when using my CCF sit pad under my feet.

As usual, YMMV (a lot!) and you never know for sure until you try for a full night on the trail, when the metabolism really slows down around 3-6am.

Always best to err on the side of slightly warmer buffer, at least at first.

I think that’s a good choice. That temp rating will cover a lot of days for you in the smokies.

It's threads like this that have pushed me about 2 inches away from ordering a Wilderness Logic 3/4 premium quilt...that bad boy is rated at 15 degrees. I already have the summer series 3/4 and it hugs my backside like a glove.
