Rain in the Dolly Sods Wilderness

It’s been a crazy few weeks at work and I’ve been itching to get out somewhere and finally a few do workers and myself did just that, despite a forecast filled with rain.

We got so lucky! The skies even turned blue on Friday and we had some great hiking in, though that night the rain came. And came. And kept coming. It rained alllll day Saturday and I was often walking in ankle deep water, or fording knee high streams, but it was still a good time.

I’m definitely a little rusty, my tarp pitch and hammock hanging weren’t up to par but it still felt good to get back out there.

I think I need to get a bigger tarp and start bringing the pup with me

Looks like a good trip and sometimes it's fun to play in the rain

The Sods have been wet all year. I made my first trip out there this past January in between snow falls and all the creeks and many of the trails were full of water.

Just curious what the bugs were like after all that rain. I’m looking at going back this summer.

There were some annoying black flies. We got a good fire going, which helped, but it still wasn’t the best. The were only an issue in the southern section, which is mostly forest. In the north it’s more open and the wind kept us big free.

Murph, enjoynthat habanero; I was using one myself. I love George’s stuff! I carried my habaneros for the whole AT and they’re still going strong!

And thankee Shug, I’m a tad star struck
