VIDEO: Superior Hiking Trail - Moose, Bear, and Sunsets

Last week I enjoyed a 6 day, 50 mile journey on the Superior Hiking Trail from Sugar Loaf Road to Beaver Bay. The trek included seeing a moose, a bear attacking my ursack, breathtaking sunsets at Sonju Lake, Section 13 overlook, and Bear Lake and countless views from places like Kennedy Creek, Sawmill Dome, and Saw Mill Pond. While I had to adapt due to losing some of my food and my hiking partners dropping out, the weather and amazing people I met on the trail made this a wonderful trip. The usually muddy SHT, was the driest I have seen it. Join me on my hike via this video.

Nice video & looks like you had a fun trip despite the bear encounter.

    Thanks for posting.

Yea with the surge of popularity on the SHT and waves of humanity flocking to it the last three years, bears are starting to home in on it and more issues are cropping up. I had never even seen a bear on the trail for the ten years prior to that, now it's becoming more like the boundary waters.

You've gotten really good at the editing man in a short amount of time. Keep up the great videos.

Looks like a good time. Not knowing the area that well, it seemed like a fair number of people out there. Is that due to holiday or is this area a little more accessible? Just curious. Thanks for taking us along!

Given the POV camera footage on the bear encounter, I propose a new title for your video, the "Bear Witch Project."

I thought the same thing. I know that movie scared the hell out of people. A flashlight in the woods. I didn't get it. Being solo and knowing a bear was present changed things a bit though.

I didn't see a ton of people while walking, more while camping. It is a more popular part of the trail on a popular weekend. Kennedy Creek campsites are popular because there is a pretty good gap between sites on both sides.

Wow. Section 13 is an easy to get to site and I feel there are some careless campers there food-wise. Thus maybe the bear.
I just got the alum liner for my Ursack to try.
Seems a few have been molested of late.
I still like the simplicity and my food is away from me!

Tom from Ursack suggested the inconvenience of the liner probably wasn't worth it since this type of thing doesn't happen too often in our next of the woods. Iook forward to your thoughts on the liner. As you can see in my latest video, I stuck with the Ursack without a liner, but I used more ziplock bags within the opsak to keep foods better segregated if the bag is smashed. I will always check my bag now after leaving camp and coming back before bedtime.
