If you are backpacking and using an underquilt, get the single layer.
Get the double layer if you need any of:
- Option to use a pad.
- Extra durability.
- Light mosquito bite-through protection.
I love my double cause I can slide a bag between the layers instead of a pad
I have a single and a heavyweight double. I prefer less stretch and like the double better. The single gets used when I want to pack lighter. I'm 6' and 200 lbs for reference.
I have a double 1.1. My first hammock was a single layer Hennessy. Mosquitos got me a lot in July. I bought the double and that problem went away. I use an underquilt too in cooler temps. I use the space between the layers as a storage place for my clothes that I'm wearing the next day
I have had a single, but my lightweight double Eldorado is more comfortable to me. Definitely a HYOH thing.

The Heavyweight DL is my most comfortable hammock, because I don't like stretch. However, I use the 1.7 SL for hiking, since it's still comfortable enough. Unfortunately, I get backpain from the 40D SL hammocks. So if you don't need the double layer for capacity or to use a pad, you'll have to try and see which one is the most comfortable hammock for you. Or at least comfortable enough.
I'm with hutzelbien on this one. I like a REALLY firm hammock if I don't have to carry it all day. I also like the idea that my double-layer XLC is virtually bomb-proof. Others like some stretch. Comes down to personal preference.
I got the Eldorado heavyweight double layer and at 270# it doesn’t budge. If you’re looking for non stretch then I would go double
I have the double, I like options. Maybe there are times a pad is the better choice, maybe there are a lot of masquitos, who knows? But I always have options.
I can see the other side too..."you pays your money and you takes your choice"
