So I had the opportunity to do an overnight hang last night. Last minute decision to run up to Green Ridge State Forest in Maryland. These are primitive drive in campsites. They have a fire ring and a picnic table. No toilets except at the Forrest HQ which is distant from any of the campsites. I rolled into the HQ at 8:45 pm looked over the map chose campsite 32 since there didn't seem to be campers nearby. Self registered and drove off to the site. It is recommended you have 4 wheel drive. Although it is not too bad.
There was just a touch of light left in the sky when I got to the site. There was one set of trees that I was able to use after attaching an extension on one tree strap, the tree was fairly large. This site has a babbling brook right next to it! Sweet sounds all night long. It is tucked in a ravine and is sheltered well from wind. It was cool enough last night I barely needed my costco under and top. I didn't notice any bugs in the evening but the no see-ums were out in the morning. Just across from the entrance to the camp site is a small fishing pond. Although my fishing rod was in the other car from our Florida trip last week.
I was up early to the sounds of whip-o-wills, broke camp and headed home enjoying a (slow) drive through morning clouds/fog.
If you like primitive site, If it's just you, or someone is willing to go to ground, give site 32 a try.
