    40* costco underquilts??

I am planning to hike in Colorado in July with a friend. My problem is that I have talked him into trying a hammock, and I only have one 30* UGQ underquilt. My time is running out to have something made by mid July, so my thoughts are moving toward some of the DIY 40* costco underquilts and top quilts on ebay. Temps are usually in the 40's in the night. After reading some posts here about the costco DIY stuff, it doesnt seem like they would keep me warm.

Is this accurate? For those who have made or purchased these, what's the lowest temps you would shoot for? This is with a good insulated clothing layer on while sleeping.

    Thank you in advance!

Don't have any information on the Costco quilts but there are a number of vendor's here that have quilts in stock for immediate shipping. Jacks or Better comes to mind and a couple of the others now also carry some items in stock. I am sure someone else will jump in with a name or two.

I made a Costco UQ and TQ. I've used them into the lower 50s. I paired the UQ with my 25* sleeping bag (no TQ) and used them into the upper to maybe mid-40s. I like to be warm when I sleep. I was wearing shorts and a light fleece to sleep...and a hat. So Id say you'd be pushing the limits of those quilts by themselves...you could later or an UQ protector might get you a few more degrees. Good luck!

I've used costco quilts down to -14C (10f? something like that)

it's a very personal thing, temp ratings.

to me, 40f is easy with the costco quilts, as long as you've seam ripped them, and hang them properly

I just slept last night around 35°F with a 20° Wookie and a CDT for my top quilt and the only thing I did was sew the footbox, not seem ripped. I wore a long sleeve under armour and fleece pajama pants and socks and was hot.

I've been down to 32 degrees by accident with my heavily modified Costco DIY quilt set. Was chilly, but able to sleep.

It doesn't pack down very small, but have you looked into the Snugpak UQ? I've hung in the 40s with it and been fine. Super affordable.

Look into wilderness logics, the budget winter underquilt is amazing! Marty made mine and I had it in exactly a weeks time. You can't beat his craftsmanship and customer service.

Thanks for all the replies! Last night I tried my Costco quilt and my 10* UGQ underquilt outside. It got down to 38*, and I was chilled from the waist down. I wore Patagonia capsline bottoms, wool socks. On top I had a midweight top with a heavy fleece 1/4 zip over that. I really didn't think I'd be very warm with the Costco quilt. I was able to sleep, but was not toasty warm like I wanted.

I did place an order for a 30* econ top/bottom quilt from Hammock Gear yesterday. Hopefully I will get a delivery about a week before I head to Colorado.

Thanks again for all the replies!
