    Warbonnet guyline coating

Has anyone else ordered the gray guyline from WB? It is definitely lash-it, but mine came with this thick black coating on it that makes it impossible to splice.

I even dipped one end in denatured alcohol and wiped it to try and loosen it up but I still couldn’t get my splicing tool through it.

Here it is pictured next to some lash-it I already had

I don't know the WB line, but if it's coated that much, it isn't Lash-It but likely some generic UHMWPE line. As far as I know, all Dyneema or UHMWPE ropes are coated with PU (?) - I assume to improve handling (e.g. knot-holding capacity) and add color. With well-made ropes like Lawson's or Samson's, you don't notice the coating much. But I have bought ropes from other manufacturers that looked and handled like you're describing. In really bad cases, it looks like the rope is breaking when you bend it. Splicing was possible but not easy or enjoyable. It think the coating makes the rope knotable, though.

You may have gotten a roll with a heavier than normal coating, but this is the first time I've heard anyone say it wasn't spliceable. The coating is normally what I would call a medium coating, it helps give the line more stiffness which makes it more tangle resistant.

I could get my awl through it to make holes for the brummel locks. But I couldn’t get my splicing tool through the center of the braid.

It’s not a big deal though, I’ll make use of it, that coating will be really good for knots.
