    NC>Linville Gorge>5/25-5/27

I’m trying to plan a car camping trip with a day hike to Linville Gorge Memorial Day weekend. There will be 2 adults and 4 children.

I’m looking for suggestions on places to car camp within about a 30 minute drive to Linville. We’re not looking for a hike in location.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Lots of pull-in sites on Kiestler Memorial Hiway side of Gorge. Free. First come first serve.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Shug!

Do you, or anyone else know if there are pull-in sites off Table Rock Rd. as well?

BTW, I loved your recent video on the Neusiok Trail, Uwharrie Trail/Dutchman Creek's Trail, and Linville Gorge. We recently completed the Uwharrie Trail/Dutchman's Creek Trail figure 8 and there are several "kick you in the teeth" climbs. Your video has me very excited to visit the Gorge in a couple of weeks!

The drive up site in video was on Table Rock Road about a mile from Gingercake Acres. Hawksbill parking has some camping but you must be 200' from road. Was a site on knoll across from Spence Ridge parking that was once descent. There is the the campground near the Falls off BRP spur road.

After some additional research, this is our tentative plans.

We are hopefully going to be able to car camp for the weekend at a pull-in site off Table Rock Rd., preferrably near Hawsbill TH arriving Friday evening. From there I would like to summit Hawksbill, take Ledge trail around to Spence Ridge, and follow Spence Ridge down to the river. Hopefully we can accomplish this in time to have a good, relaxing lunch by the river.

After lunch, we will take Spence Ridge back up to Little Table Rock trail to summit Little Table Rock and the Table Rock. From Table Rock, we will take the section of MST to Spenc Ridge TH and return to our camp site by Table Rock Rd.

If I've mapped it out correctly, this should be about an 8 mile loop to complete for a day hike. I know the Gorge will humble the mightiest, so I don't want to underestimate what this path will throw at us.

We are open to suggestions and recommendations that will help us make sure our daughters love their first (but hopefully not last) trip to the Gorge.

That will quite a challenging trip that day. Going down the Ledge...finding the connector to Spence and following it there is pretty tricky and difficult. Especially with children.
Ledge is steep dangerous rocks coming down from Hawksbill.
Little Table Rock Trail is very difficult and VERY steep.
You may want to re-think it.
Not saying you can't do it but I have done it with Hickery and they are Ledge and Little Table rock Trail are no joke.
I would suggest just going down Spence to river and/or going up Table Rock.
Keep in mind too that it is not about miles in the Gorge. Miles are measured differently in there.

See them both a bit in this video....

I have revised the “planned” route after taking the sage advise from here and other forums. It will still be subject to change, but here is the revised route:

    1. Camp near Spence Ridge TH
    2. Camp to TR summit by MST (1.5 miles)
    3. TR summit to LTR summit to SR trail by LTR trail (1.5 miles)
    4. SR trail to river (1 mile)
    5. River to camp by SR trail (1.5 miles)

If the girls struggle more than we anticipate then we have some bail out points before committing to something that could get them or us in trouble.
