    SLOVAKIA: private island check

Sometimes the weather switches the plans from the forest to the river and the other way, so we decided to start the canoe season a bit sooner than usual. We needed to check our private island in the Danube river system, to check out the trees, if they survived the beavers attacks.

Nice! Even the teddy bear made the trip. We had four beavers move into our neighborhood three years ago. They killed/damaged a number of lakeside trees before being removed.

Great pics and it looks like another great trip with the kids. I hope there were PFDs readily available. I had to save my daughter at a very similar age when she got into something that she thought she couldn't handle and panicked. I really thought she was more than capable of handling the situation, but panic easily over rides reason. As a parent it was one of those scary episodes that you play over in your mind for years.

I hope the beaver were relocated and not simply killed. Beaver are such important ecosystem "engineers" that inadvertently provide quality habitat for so many other species far beyond our mere recreational enjoyment. I've had the opportunity to work on beaver relocation/repatriation with in Wilderness Areas in the Yellowstone ecosystem by packing them back into the back country via mules.

That is the Danube river? Looks really nice, I'll say. How do you protect trees from beavers without killing or relocating them? Maybe put some gross tasting paste around the bark of the trees base?

Beavers plan and build for the long term so instead of gnawing on one tree at a time, they work on all the trees in their area. Eventually they will use them for dams and food. In suburban settings in southern Wisconsin, they are causing quite a puzzle for wildlife and urban management. When commercial trappers first came to WI a couple centuries ago, beavers were everywhere in abundance. Trapping, farming, and human population growth reduced those numbers to about 500 around the year 1900. Wildlife management practices brought the numbers back up to 150,000+ in the next 80 years and numbers have fluctuated since depending on wildlife management plans. Fast-forward another 40 years...this spring a number of suburban communities have reported problems with property damage and flooding due to beavers and muskrats. Some citizens don't want anyone to disturb the beavers whatsoever, others want the beavers to be live-trapped and relocated, and a third contingent wants them trapped humanely (aka drowned). All three solutions have proponents and opponents based on costs, feelings, and agreed-upon management practices. Ultimately, the state's Department of Natural Resources says that local communities need to figure out what strategies they are going to use. Bottom line: Beavers are expanding back into their historic ranges. We certainly have plenty of trees and water across the state. Local issues are solved locally.
