Yes, Samson has recommendations. And Dutch explains how you calculate fids. It always depends on the rope diameter.

A little 'trial and error' will quickly provide the info you need. Just do a few plain buries without locked brummels so you can pull them back out without losing any rope.

It's been so long since I spliced that I had to spend a couple of minutes doing a test splice in 7/64" Amsteel.

I marked 8" as my entry and exit points on the exterior sheath of the bury which ended up with a 6 1/2" bury so your assumption of +2" would be about right for a full 8" bury.
Is a bury’s length best described as before splicing or after splicing is completed?

    Splicing - length of bury?

If I know which way is best for strength and safety, without overkill or waste; then I’ll have a better understanding of minimal requirements for hammock suspensions.
    Thanks to y’all both

Well, from the Samson drawings it looks like they measure the bury before splicing. For a locked Brummel 2 fids with the eye not shorter than 1 fid. For the whoopie sling bury 3 1/2 fids.

For an fixed splice (eye, CL, etc.) the bury length is "marked" on the free end being buried so an 8" bury would have 8" of rope buried while the outer sheath covering that bury started off as ~10" for 7/64" amsteel.

My earlier test example where I stated I marked 8" on the sheath was only done so that I could tell how much it had "shrunk" when completed.

Thanks, gmcttr, now I know, with no guessing about finished length of splice.
