    UCR question

I am starting to play around with making suspensions and I want to make a UCR. Most if not all of the tutorials I have seen show using two different size ropes for the constrictor. Like 7/64 and 1/8 amsteel.

I am curious if you can use two sections of 7/64 amsteel instead. I don't see why it wouldn't work as the whoopie is one solid strand.

So is the only benefit going to be that is it easier to pull the UCR through itself when one rope is larger than the other?

Folks usually use a larger inner rope to increase the constriction, but you can use the same size. You may need to make the bury just a bit longer to achieve the same constriction.

I usually will do a ten inch bury finished with a tautline hitch to help secure it.

Hmm, I was under the impression that the outer rope was the larger of the two. I think I will just use 7/64 for both and give it a go. Had planned on using a prusik knot soft shackled to the end of outer rope to keep the bury taught.

Nope. You want the larger diameter buried inside the smaller diameter rope. I tried what you are talking about (smaller 7/64 buried in bigger 1/8) just because I had some 1/8 scraps laying around. That thing failed immediately in my backyard.

I've made several and seen several tutorials and I've never see the two different size ropes that you mention. I think I recall reading about it somewhere on here once but I wouldn't call it the standard. You may want a slightly longer bury that you would need for a whoopie but thats the only precaution you should take. Making the whole thing out of 7/64 will be fine.
    Good luck,

Plus plus on what Red says
Same size for both ropes is what is mostly used

A while back I’d posted, using 1/8 on inside and 7/64 on outside of bury. I think it grips better. This is me guessing again. Although I did splice some scraps and pulled it with my hands and it seemed to grip better. I did not try it in my hammock.
Also I noticed it gripped better if the inner 1/8 rope was a grainy more textured rope than amsteel.

Also, a slip knot tied on inner rope, one inch from bury exit, will stop slipping. If UCR slips, it will only be able to slip that one inch. This way you can’t fall or slide to ground, because slip knot is too big to be pulled inside bury.

This is all Phantom guessing again.
I’m guessing, right now you’re drinking some coffee.

I typically use the same size cordage, whether it's zingit, amsteel or dynaglide... getting the length of the bury right is critical.

The only time I have used two different sizes was when making mini ucrs on Spectra hollow braid fishing line. 300# test for the main cordage and smaller 200# test on the outer sleeve of the ucr.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Sounds like a lot of extra bits and work.

Just secure the bury as shown here...https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...To-Make-an-UCR

I had considered going that route. I’m still debating, but I like the idea of having a smaller prusik and shackle made of dynaglide.

I suppose once all of my materials come in I’ll make a decision. So. Many. Decisions.
