Got some rain one night over the weekend. The wind wasn't much, maybe 10mph max, but that was enough to get some of my stuff wet. Pretty far in under the tarp too. Impossible to set up the side against the wind because it changes and swirls around so much in the woods. I really should have ate the extra 7oz and went with my Superfly instead.

Total n00b, here, (over-)planning my first trip, this summer.

I'm usually a group-canoe-tripper, and now I'm heading out on a solo backpack, so I have to buy a bunch of gear, but it pains me, as I already have a bunch of stuff, and I tend to be overly thrifty.

Traveling in August in Central Ontario (Algonquin), so I'm more worried about too hot than too cold, but we can get some lovely thunder storms.

As someone said on another thread, I want to make sure that my first hanging trip doesn't become my last, due to discomfort that could have been avoided by a few more grams or dollars.

Since I'm pretty sure that I'll be bringing a rain poncho (rain gear, pack cover, privacy for a quick change of clothes), I was thinking that I could rig that as a door on one end of a hex, if needed. Comments?

I'm leaning toward the Dutch Xenon Hex to go on top of my HH Exped, in case that matters. Comments on tarp welcome, but please don't tell me why I don't want the HH: I've already bought it (used), and I've never even slept in a hammock, so I'm not dropping more $$ on that.

Thanks for being such a great forum!

You might want to start a new thread to get your question answered directly.

I like the peace of mind my Superfly affords, I've seldom been out in a storm with little wind. I also carry an UQP - you could rig a rain poncho as a quilt protector Derek Hansen style (JRB sells 'em already rigged).

What are you bringing for insulation?

If I’m not mistaken the idea of the Grizz Beak perfected by Professor Hammock started as a poncho closing off one end of his tarp.

    Go for it

Sent from somewhere east of Montauk...
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Doors. I have had Too Many surprise-sideways-cold-rain adventures to count. Stays dry even when trees are sparse and not perfect relative to wind direction. Doors prevent the hammock from becoming a parasail in heavy winds. Heat retention is better with doors. 5' long sides are ideal. Carryweight for mine are 20oz in silny and 9oz in Cuben-DCF.

I have a super fly, a tadpole, and just ordered a mini fly form warbonnet. I hoping it will be the best of both worlds. Maybe give warbonnets new tarps a look.
We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.
