You can change the search option at the top of the Hammock Forums page to use Google Search instead the web site search option.
    Here is how you do it;
    Go to your SETTINGS.
    Click GENERAL SETTINGS.
Scroll all the way down until you find Search Type.
In the drop down box you have the option to use "Googel Search"

Just checked. My setting is already set to Google Search. Has been for a while. The setting does not allow the 3 letter search option either, hence the OP.
Once set to "Google Search" should this setting function just like a search of:
    CRL length site:hammockforums.net?
I am not seeing that result.

I changed my search option to google following attroll's directions.

Then I used the standard search box at the top of the page to search for 'sap bag' and got the correct search for "site:http://hammockforums.net sap bag" with 477 results.

So...I don't know why it's not working for you.

Perhaps the order is important? Try both “term site:hammockforums.net” and “site:hammockforums.net term”

The order makes no difference when doing your own google search.

The point here is if you change your default search to Google for this forum's search engine, all you have to do is use the search box and not perform a separate google search where you would have to type out 'term site:forum'.

As noted in the OP I am using the "advanced search" option on this site. It appears that the Google Search option is not used when on the advanced screen and only applies to the search box above the advanced search link.
When I us just the search box and type what i am searching for it takes me to the Google page and shows the results for this site on the Google page.
Google search does not work on the advance search section of the HF site. The option does save you from leaving the site and from typing "site: HF.net". That is a helpful thing for most searches.

I have done this, and I like it. But there is one annoyance - the search results are displayed in a new browser window. Not a new browser tab, a new browser window.

Could it be configured to display in the same browser tab? A new browser tab would also be ok.

Yes, you are somewhat correct if I understand you correctly.
If you change the option in your settings to use Google search it will use Google when you type something in the HF search box.
If you click on Advance Search, its does not use Google.
What would be the reason to have Google in the Advance Search?
