Video: use a double layer hammock with bugnet for bivy

IMHO, the main reason to buy a double layer hammock is if you anticipate going to ground with a pad. If so, you should definitely have a bugnet on it. In this little video I show how I do it, based on my experience of the last 10 years of hammocking.

    Nice video.

Of course, if there really is nothing to tie the head-end to, you can use a hiking pole.

One question - you don’t seem to worry about protecting the bottom of the hammock from damage. Have you had any problems?

I've done the same sorta thing with my Amok. the tarp is almost made to be used with hiking poles like this

obviously it's not ideal, but it works pretty well

Good question. No problems with the hammock bottom. That said, I have tended to use thicker fabric hammocks, i.e. 1.7 dbl in this case.

IMHO people are overly concerned with the fragility of their hammocks. Think of how long tent floors last. Granted tent floors are more durable fabric, but still...

Nice. Straightforward explanation of how to put it on the ground.

Thanks, Kurt. I always appreciate your posts.

Thanks, Kurt! Did you say you are in Saguaro NP, including the opening scenes hiking in? If so, I am amazed to see how it looks. That is one part of AZ I have never been to.

Hey BillyBob, good to hear from you, been a long time. Yes, in the Rincon Mountains of Saguaro. I am just editing my Youtube video guide to backpacking in Saguaro NP which will cover all the trails in the park. It's all Ponderosa pines above 6-7,000 ft, which is not what people expect to see in this area.

Great! Now I've got a new place to travel to! More there than just saguaros- not that they are not worth seeing just in and of themselves!
