I'd probably drink permethrin and live with the aftereffects if that is the alternative.

Gadget - thanks for the tip about buying a ready made net - thats probably the route I'll take. I'm not a fan of bug nets generally but I have an almost obsessive fear of midges and I feel the need to have a net even though I will likely only camp in Scotland for three or four days.
I will do the permethrin treatment since its what I do in the Spring but if I remember correctly permethrin isn't effective against midges. I could be wrong though.
You are wise to take the Scottish midge seriously. I live here and now I don't have a reaction to the bites but the sheer volume of them in and around you is horrid. I even take a head net to work in case I'm called out to a bad spot.
Last year, I went up to Cape Wrath for a week at the end of June... I was fully prepared!
I permethrin'd my hammock, Fronkey net and my clothes. Took DEET, a headnet (which doubled as a suffsack) and light cotton gloves.
The irony was, the weather was breezy and I hardly saw a midge.

Haha! I bet if you hadn't taken all of those precautions there would have been millions of them.
