We set out on an eight day trip headed westbound on the 77 mile Foothills Trail.
Being average hikers, we wanted extra time to linger and thought we'd rather be comfortable at camp than ultralight trailblazers. So, we packed up our 40+ lb packs (ouch) and set out on our journey.
Special thanks to swampfox for his generosity in helping to plan for this trip. The waypoints and spreadsheet he provided were instrumental in helping us along the way and setting a reasonable schedule to hit the best spots as we camped.
I'd also highly recommend Jim Simpson aka Taz as a great option for a shuttle to make the hike much more enriched and possible for single car hikers. Great guy that was full of knowledge and insight about the area.
The Foothills Trail is a real gem and I've never been in such quiet and pristine areas in my life. We walked through areas where the only sound you could hear was wind. We spent 3 days at a time without seeing any man-made modern conveniences. We traveled from lush winterized laurel valleys, to hibernating hardwood forests, to beautiful mountain piney woods, ambled through the warm fishing grounds of the Chattooga River Valley area, and finished out the trip wandering the leaf fall and burnouts of the Oconee State Park.

It was a real challenge and a surprising treat. Solitude, stiff terrain, and clean water was aplenty. Beginning at Table rock gave more than we expected.

Laurel and Rhododendron were everywhere and though we saw very little wildlife, being on the cusp of seasons imparted an extra sense of stillness and calm that is rare. The flora was breathtaking, even with the lack of fauna.

We walked for days in a mountain mist. We had rain on two occasions. During both we were comfortably tucked away under tarps in downy goodness. Mother Nature was kind and the mist and overcast only added to the enchantment of the natural beauty and stillness. Many times the silence would last for hours, only to be broken by our voices, or the soothing sound of running water.

Our accommodations were more than adequate and the camping opportunities were varied and plentiful.

We finally got legs under us around day six and burnt up the final sixteen miles on day seven, saving ourselves a day and avoiding the rains that were to set in on the final day of our scheduled hike.
The trip was incredible and while it was very challenging, the almost mystical quality of the hike was really indescribable. Words won't do justice.
If you get a chance to check out the foothills trail, it's worth the look. Great trail! Very well maintained and the few people we met were all very friendly. I'll call it a hidden gem and I know it won't stay that way forever.
Given the great organization behind the trail and the quality coordination between the various entities, I can only see this trail improving and becoming more popular.
So, for the reasons we seek these adventures, whether to challenge ourselves physically, to find solitude, to see remote beauty, or to just find a good place to hang, the foothills trail is a great place for it.

Happy Hanging, Folks.
