You are right about the taxi or uber. I will definitely check out the link you suggested. Thank you very much!

But there are some local alternate options in many areas that are a possibility without a rental car. Here in Idaho, we have http://www.sawtoothtrans.com that provides shuttle service for backpackers from and to all sorts of locations....with trailhead drop off and pick up.

National Forests (as opposed to National Parks) are your friends out here. If you want to be reminded that "freedom isn't free", camp in a National Park...

    I plus one to this.
You can get to Seattle from the Airport easily.
You can leave Seattle by ferry to the Olympic Penisula several ways. Take a bus all the way to Forks, or further. There are several transfers you will need to make, and maybe a layover at Port Angeles.
Stopping on the way you have access to so many places, and getting the needed permit is easy.

I would suggest a 6-7 day trip from Shi Shi Beach to Rialto beach. You can get a bus there from Forks, if I recall.
I did this myself years ago. By bus all the way out and back to Seattle.
    Not my trip:

If you have less time, you can start at Rialto Beach and go north, turn around when you want. There is a great campground near Rialto beach, Mora Campground.

Or spend 4-5 days, or even more on the Hoh River trail.
Hurricane Ridge and access some real back country.
    Olympic Hot Springs

The East side of the Olympics has so many places also.
You can spend the whole summer there and not cover very much.
I have not hammocked there, but there are so many trees. BIG trees.
    Bear canisters have become required.

The beach hike from Shi-Shi to Rialto Beach would be doable by bus since Clallam Transit goes out to Neah Bay(a few miles from the northern trailhead). Reaching Rialto you would have to hitchhike to Forks to get a bus. Olympic Hot Springs is a very long road walk now as the Elwah Rd. is washed out before the ranger station (all access to trails in the area is foot only now.) The eastside Olympics trailheads will all be miles of road walking without a car. That said, I've spent a lifetime exploring here and haven't seen it all yet. And the hammocking is great!
