    Tucson area options for October?

Hello, I've been hanging in the back yard for a while, but am interested in a first foray into actual hammock camping. The kids have some time off at the beginning of October and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good options within a few hours of Tucson. I'd prefer not to turn it into a winter camping adventure, so probably want to stay at lower elevations this time of year, but of course that makes it tougher to find hanging options. Thanks for any ideas.

The AZ Fall Hang is right outside of Payson the weekend of the 5-7th. That’s not very far from Tucson...

Great, is there more detail somewhere? A quick Google search didn't provide much. Thanks.

October is not yet winter conditions in the mountains around Tucson. IMHO, your best option is the Rose Canyon campground on Mt Lemmon:

    https://www.recreation.gov/camping/r...O&parkId=70583

It's open thru the end of October. No hiking required, and plenty of sites with lotsa trees. It's not free, but for what you get... There's lots of stuff for kids to do there: fish in the lake, etc.

There is lots of free dispersed camping in the National Forests around Tucson, but as a first outing they would be more challenging.

One of my favorite spots is the Turkey Creek area in the Chiricahuas. We had the Spring hang there in 2017 and folks thought it was a great spot. It's free, but more of a drive for you. Here's my video on that area:

I've got lots more guides to Tucson-area backpacking trails on my YT channel, but it might be a while before your kids are ready for that.

Thanks. I think we can manage the upper 40s to 50s pretty well. Hopefully it won't be booked up.

I'll check out some of your other stuff soon. My wife is interest in more hardcore type stuff without the kids, like multiple hour hikes in to nice secluded spots.

By the way, do you think I should rig up netting or something for bugs, or should we be okay up there this time of year?

Mosquitoes are pretty scarce around here unless you're in a riparian area. The biggest issue are flies, which typically stop flying after sunset.

    In short, no bugnet required.

Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoon Mtns, is under 2 hours from Tuscon. Camp back country, or in a campground. Drive through a few ghost towns, and is a great history and geology lesson, too.

Yep, that's a good one, headed there with the Tucson Backpacking Meetup group next weekend. Never tried hanging in the campground on the East side of the range, it is a nice campground but very busy, get there early to get a site.
