You’re right. The double Dutch is made for Chameleons. I was thinking of the birds nest. I went with the .582 spreader bar 32” full length, I believe. I think I saw on one of Sintax77’s videos that Dutch recommended 32” as the best length for the spreader bar.

I’ve been hanging with my kids since they were about 6 months old. The first bed my son (now 4) learned sleep all night in was his hammock. When camping I have a Hennessy cub for each of them and I use a Dutch spreader to hang them side by side and then my hammock goes up high between them and we’re all snug under one tarp. They are 4 and 6 now and love camping in their hammocks. Occasionally I’ve had to reach over a comforting arm but they more often sleep better in their hammocks then they do at home.

Also, if you're wanting to keep the price down, you can put the Birds Nest around a pair of the 11' Netless hammocks, which are currently on sale. $11.50 for the spreader, $16 for Double Whoopie hooks, $5.25 for 25'x7/64" AmSteel (for pair of Double Whoopie Slings), $8.45 for a pair of 5' tree huggers, $99 for the Birds Nest, $38 for 11' Netless with ridgeline & no suspension, $77 for 11' Netless with ridgeline & Whoopie hook suspension, gets two people hangin' nicely in a bugnet for around $260. You'd still need pads/sleeping bags/quilts depending on the temperature, and a tarp if there's any chance of rain, but that would be a relatively cheap way to get started with decent gear.
I've actually been looking at both and will probably order either a Birds Nest or the Double Dutch next week. I really like the the Double Dutch concept, but it only works with Chameleons. The Birds nest is slightly more expensive and about 30% heavier, but it will work with any pair of hammocks and it has a spot for gear storage and possibly keeping "your pet in the bug free zone with you" - which might matter if I can get my wife out in a hammock. OTOH, a pair of Chameleons would be nice, and the thought of getting her to hang when it's cold enough to actually need my Blackbird XLC+Wookie is, perhaps, overly optimistic...

Thanks for all the suggestions! A spreader + twin bug net combo looks like it would fit our wish list. I will probably MYOG most of the kit.
I went through this some years ago. I purchased two pieces of hennessy cub zip hammock for the kids. Its complete set, you dont need to buy something else. Sleeping bag for inside with sleeping pad, and for summer enough. For adults, any other cheap hammock, maybe look at DD hammock if 270cm long hammock is not short for you. I would strongly recommend to get a setup that will allow you to sleep separately. Just in case, and the time will come for sure.
Two hammocks with kids 4 and 7 years old /hennessy cub zip/
Then I sewed two hammock for them. If you find the trees big enough, or two trees on one end, you dont need spreader bars, double hooks, any of that and will save you some money besides to have unused equipment
close enough one to another, no fear from darkness, usually they fall asleep in 2 minutes after loading the hammock /we hike, or they play, run, etc. so they are exhausted in the evening/
What you need is a large tarp to cover two hammock in bad weather conditions
