    Dyeing dyneema/polypro straps

Here are the straps after washing with detergent and drying:

The dyneema definitely didn't take as much of the dye as I'd hoped, but what color it has, I don't think it'll lose. If I did it again, I'd go for a full black color mix to get as dark as possible... but looking at the Rit DyeMore formula, I'm not sure the difference would be noticeable:

    20 parts Graphite
    2 parts Racing Red
    1 part Sapphire Blue

Since it seems to have a blue hue anyway, I'd maybe scrap the blue and just do some mix of red & graphite to try to get to black. YMMV

Be interesting to see how the dye holds up sometime down the road.
The common wisdom is that dyneema cannot be dyed, where the dye is taken up by the fibres, rather than just depositing on the surface.
Coloured dyneema is self-coloured, ie the color is part of the UHMWPE plastic that the dyneema threads are manufactured from.
I use a lot of hollow braid dyneema fishing line, comes in lots of bright colors... which comes off on your hands over time!

I tried using the ink from 3 black gel pens and 3/4 fl oz of isopropyl alcohol as a solvent. It was just enough to make the straps really black and soaked with dye when it was wet. After it dried, it is now a grey or silver color, which I find much better than stark white. It does not seem to be rubbing off, though the very top surface is probably white and the ink is in the fibers underneath. The grey works fine for me.

Hey @Snaps, I found this thread from Google since I'm looking at the same straps and want to do the same thing you have done. Now that it's been about 2 1/2 years, hows the dye holding up for you?

Hey @Fishbite, after 2 1/2 years hows this method working for the straps? Holding up well? Looking to do something similar and just exploring my options.

It's... not. I have some basically unused straps that are definitely lighter than the ones I dyed, but the dye didn't hold like I'd hoped despite doing everything I could to see that it would.

That's a bummer, was hoping it would hold up. But good to know, thanks for replying!
