I think everyone is going to differ on this and also take into account temps, humidity, season, level of exertion that day, insulation, hammock, tarp pitch, ground slope, distance to water, top or bottom of hill, forest or desert, inner furnace, state of body and mind, bio-rhythm, astrological sign, vibe, mood, birthday, IQ level, candy consumed, length of toenails, personal aura and stature as a human.

    That about covers it.

I've field tested the holy guacamole out of everything I use and know what works for me in a wide variety of conditions. It is a short drive to the woods for me, but you've got the perfect backyard "lab" for experimenting and perfecting stuff. I learned a lot from your videos, especially about pesky UQ issues!!

True, I did think of adding that qualification to the post, but did not.

The thing about sleeping sans clothes in the woods, is that you are in bad shape if you have to make a midnight run to drain the lizard. For practicality, I wear a base layer (merino) and keep sweatpants, and camp mocs nearby for those times where I have to make a midnight run to the privy.

Excellent point! The bodies attempt to cool us off- when we have over heated- but use of sweat, will become a big negative later on after that sweat gets into our insulation. Which it invariably will if vapor barriers are not used, as is the case 95+% of the time. Sweat evaporates(liquid to vapor) from our skin and cools us down, but then often re-condenses(vapor back into liquid) into our outer insulation layers. Or, is simply wicked away and absorbed as liquid into our thicker layer of insulation without even evaporating and cooling, leading to even more sweat production in an attempt to relieve our over heated condition. Naturally, as our core temp routinely drops during the night along with the outside temp, and now we need all of that excessive insulation that we started the night with, guess what is nicely stored in out down quilts waiting for us? Any of that vapor that did not make it past our breathable shells because it met the dew point inside of our shell. And any outright liquid sweat that wa absorbed. Over heating now usually means shivering once the over heat condition is removed.
