NEED HELP: CHEAHA WILDERNESS - ALABAMA

I am taking my son out on a 2-day backpacking trip this weekend. We normally go to the Sipsey Wilderness but he has been asking me to do something different that has views.

We identified the Nubbin Creek Trail in the Cheaha Wilderness and looked at making a 2-night loop hiking up Nubbin Creek Trail to the Odom Scout Trail and then taking it to the Pinhoti trail and then back down the Nubbin. (I have included a link to a map for reference below.)

Here is my question though - I am really out of shape and worried the elevation up the Nubbin Creek Trail may be too much for me. I don't know - we've never been. For reference, I can hike 4-5 miles in Sipsey without any real problems but I get really winded on inclines, especially those that are steep and go on for miles.

Can anyone tell me how hard these trails are? Is the incline that bad? Based on my reference in the Sipsey, do you think this would be challenging?

Also, if you've hiked these trails before, what would be some good areas to look for camping stops. I know those are short distances for 3-days but we are wanting a leisurely hike to just spend more time at our campsites. Thanks in advance if you can give me some insight!!

I've not done this hike but according to All Trails the climb up Nubbin Creek to the Pinhoti is approximately 1200 feet. If you take your time this is doable even if you are in bad shape. Hike at a leisurely pace and enjoy the scenery and at 3.5 miles you'll be at the top.

I know Jaxx Drinkwater has several Cheaha videos that might be helpful. I don't remember specifically which trails he covers but I'll link the videos below:

And there's this one from another hiker:

The Pinhoti Trail Alliance has a page on the book of faces and a guy named Hugh Hickman answers plenty of questions about those trails. There are plenty of other hikers there willing to chime in, too.

You’re welcome! Be sure to post your trip report. I haven’t done an overnight there, yet, and love hearing and seeing how things go.

A couple buddies and I did the Pinhoti-Chinnabee-Skyway Loop in the fall of 2016. I've never done that section of the Pinhoti you'll be on.
