As always, the George Washington National Forest is open for dispersed (or wild) camping. Dispersed camping means no fees since you don't use a campground, but no running water (plenty of streams), no bathrooms, no crowds. My favorite way to camp!
You are unique, just like everyone else.
An hour and a half away is the Shenandoah Trail in Bath county.
It's a 30 mile loop that is about as wild as you can get in Virginia.
You can access from va 250 or my favorite is scotchtown draft.
Search sister mts to see. North or big sister and South or little sister.

Ok, found it. I had been on the Shenandoah Trail North of 250 around the Ramseys Draft area but not south. The Bath county reference threw me off as I knew much of it was in Augusta and Highland County. Not much on line but found it on one of my NG maps. Will have to check that area out.
Thanks for the HikeinkingUpward link ,good quick referance.

+1 on the Massanutten trails.
SNP, Massanutten (both East of the Burg) and GWNF (west of the Burg) lots of trails! I live on Massanutten mountain so do a lot here but 33 west into GWNF is pretty darn nice. Both GWNF and Massanutten (not the resort) are free, SNP has a day fee. Pick a spot and PM me and ill give you a more detailed description of the area you pick. The mountain biking here rocks too if your into that
