    Neck, Deep Sleep Issues

The last few times in my XLC I’ve woken up with a sore neck, and never got deep sleep. I tend to hang with my head end slightly lower than feet like most. I did start using a hammock gear down pillow and it might be the cause of the stiff neck but it’s so thin I’m not sure how. Also have not been getting deep restful sleep like I used to in the hammock. Is it just because I’m not dead tired after 12-15 mile days or maybe something else? Or is that deep sleep just a product of exhaustion? Thanks for any help/pointers/experience some of you may have...

Did you use a neck pillow before?
I switched to a wrap-around type neck pillow and like it.
And yes, I think being good and tired from hiking all day helps for sure. Maybe your mind is occupied with thoughts. Never know.

I sleep very well in my XLC almost every night, but over the last year I've found that no pillow is too hard on my neck, any kind of actual pillow is too high for my neck, but a folded-up 4x5' fleece blanket (to serve as a pillow) is juuusst right. My name ain't Goldilocks, but I had to experiment to find my solution since my body changed over the last year and keeps on changing as my exercise (or lack thereof) wanes and waxes. My fleece blanket pillow is soft enough, warm enough, and thin/thick enough to make my finicky neck happy.

When I use a pillow in my hammocks, I actually place in under my shoulders rather than my head or neck. This placement allows my head to flop back rather than be forced forward. It also moves my head away from the slight but constant pressure of the hammock.

Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you

I use a Nemo camping pillow. It has a foam layer but it is also inflatable so you can adjust the thickness pretty easily. Took a few trips to get it dialed in but I love it now.

I’ll have to try your idea, placing pillow to lower head

No matter how flat I get in a gathered end hammock, I seem to like having the sensation of my head laying back instead of propped up like I am at home. I use an AHE cub pillow which is small and thick and works well under my neck - its substantially smaller than the HG pillow which perhaps is a little large to be used as a neck pillow? Being down, it probably isn't as supportive either. Never really had neck pain, just slight discomfort that prompted trying a few until this one worked.

As shug said, sometimes the mind takes a while to switch off from the background noise of life...
Since the pillow is a new addition, try it without again & see if there's a difference.
You say its thin so maybe experiment with different thicknesses until you find a combo
that suits your neck/ sleeping position.

I sleep every night in a hammock and I use the same thing for a pillow. Seems to be just right.

Thanks for the help fellers, I’ll try the fleece blanket idea in my backyard when I get a chance. Also curious about placing the pillow under my shoulders that might just do the trick. I want to get this right before I head back out into the wilderness. Also never thought to try a neck pillow either but I do have an inflatable one I’ll try as well. Thanks Shug! Thanks for the assistance hammock forums!
