I also prefer something that requires no hardware, such as Becket or J-bend, and have recently been using Venom straps.

What concerns me, as IcyThunder alluded to above, is the friction and wear from releasing the slipped bight. After being loaded all night, I found both Becket and J-Bend required a very hard yank in order for them to release. This cannot be good for the straps or for the CL in the long run.

In another thread, somebody mentioned the idea of using a Marlin spike with toggle coupled directly to the CL. I used this last night during a quick overnighter in the woods and it worked quite well. It is easy to re-adjust because the Marlin spike is tied while unloaded and, of course, easy to release after slipping the toggle out. So maybe-just-maybe I have found the setup that I can stick with for a good long time.

I put one or two additional wraps around before pushing the bite through on the becket. I've never had it slip and it's definitely easier to untie than a single loop around. .

Pretty much. You just tie the Becket Hitch over the soft shackle, just like most folks do over the continuous loops of the hammock, and it keeps the larkshead of the shackle from slipping down the webbing.

With the understanding that this is a button knot in Dynaglide and not a soft shackle in Amsteel... conceptually, it is the same.

    Is this what you mean??

I've done nothing but tie this,.. haven't even tugged on yet so I have no idea if it will hold weight...

    edit...................

I larksheaded another strap onto the button knot an hung a 45# competition kettle bell from it.. and it held. Not sure whether I would hang from it though...

Now that I look at it.. I am thinking no, it's not the same.. I am going around the button knot rather than through it.. Not to say this isn't another viable option.

I use button and diamond knots on my ucrs. The button goes through the CL and is held in place by a locked whipping knot slider. While different than what you're doing, this could work as well.

That's a bit different than how I do it. I actually tie the Becket Hitch over both strands of the soft shackle, and not over the larksheaded portion. This way, the larksheaded section of the shackle butts up against the Becket Hitch and won't slip.

    ThAnks... not critical.

After examining the setup this morning it’s not likely something I would use. The prusik would redressing after its unweighted each time.. not really any benefit to me. Nice to explore options though.
