I have a minifly and a superfly.
To me the minifly is more than enough coverage. I was hanging last week in some fairly decent wind and rain and the minifly worked just fine. Anything aside from very windy conditions and I'm covered. If I am headed out for cold, wet and windy for more than a few days I'll bring the superfly. More to block the wind than to protect from the rain.
Received my second Thunderfly. This time in Dark Foliage. I LOVE IT! Nothing wrong with the Evergreen, but it was a bit too baby puke-ish color. Just the slightest bit.
Unfortunately this arrived a mere 2 hours after I left for my trip Friday so I didn't get to break it in. I'll take it with me on a big trip in a 2 weeks.
Not sure why the Mountainfly isn't more popular. I chose it over the others b/c I wanted the width of the Superfly, but don't care to have full doors. The doors are perfect for fully covering my pack when I hang it from my hammock suspension overnight. I guess most folks would just rather have the full doors.
I just spent a night under my mini-fly in 40 degree temps, steady rain, and howling winds. I wasn't expecting the wind, so I didn't set it up particularly low - just my normal head-high ridgeline height. Bone dry and comfy the entire night.
After that, I don't expect to use my big tarp with doors unless I'm going out in winter conditions.
I'm getting the impression that due to how those mini doors on the minify come down and cover the suspension and hammock ends, it's possible (if you pitch it right) to have a tarp that's only a few inches longer than your ridgeline and expect to stay dry in 99% of any weather you would encounter, short of a surprise hurricane.
When I make my Minify/Badlander copy, I'll likely make it only 8" or so longer than my hammock ridgeline.
Corvis natum est.
Adding an UQP for me meant the largest tarp I’ll ever need is the Thunderfly. I really found the narrow width of the Mini and Thunder over the other options made it much easier to fit my mountain situations. Wider tarps got into brisk much easier and I needed to trim back more around me.
