    Minifly or Thunderfly?

I would like to ask the minifly owners/users that after a few adventures are still excited about the sexy and light coverage or do yas wish you went for the 12inches extra offering in the thunderfly?

I own a silnylon Superfly and thinking of upgrading to a lighter and smaller one for three season fun!

I would also appreciate the opinions of the experienced tarpers that may own something else!

    Thanks in advance...

I debated the Thunderfly a lot. I've had the superfly and mamajamba for about 5 years now.

I have my tarps up in porch mode most of the time, so the width is what sells it for me. That's what's keeping my gear and general area dry.

Mamajamba: 10' wide (60" per side)
Thunderfly: 8.58' wide (51" per side)
Minifly: 7.58' wide (45.5" per side)

I could probably give up 9" of "roof" since I'm getting a little bit of end coverage with the half doors, but that's the most I'm willing to go. 15" shorter with the Minifly I couldn't do.

It's a fine balancing act of protecting the sides, ends, or both. That's why a lot of people just go big with the Superfly and forget it. But I do like to trim down for fair weather...it makes sense to have two or more tarps IMO.

Does the Minifly have the same vertical drop in the half-doors at the end (about 16" down from the RL tie-out, IIRC) as the half-doors on the Thunderfly?

It looks like less comparing the photos, but can't say how much. Maybe Brandon can chime in. I may shoot an email to see.

    From the WB website:

    Thunderfly

    Minifly

Now that I look at these photos, though, the Minifly doesn't look to skimpy to me. Decisions...

    But sufficiently skimpy... right?

For someone prioritizing porch mode, the Thumderfly seems like a no-brainer.

For someone who wants good added weather protection in a minimalist hex tarp, the Minifly seems like a very viable choice.

When Brandon first debuted these models, I didn't see the point in two different half-door tarps, but now that I understand the dimensions a bit better, I can see his reasoning.

It really depends on how close this is hung to the hammock. I typically keep a good distance. Photos can be deceiving, but I like the looks of both of these! There were times where I think just a few inches of door would make a difference.

Looks like the Thunderfly has a bit more peak/door and width of 103" at 14.9 ozs for silnylon.
The Mini is 91" wide and the peaks look a bit smaller. 13 ounces in Silnylon. 11.75 in Silpoly 20D
I'll be reviewing the Minify in 20D down the road a bit.
Either will work in porch mode.

Check out the weight of this just received Minifly! Looks very, very promising for use in a LD hike.

That’s 12.4 ounces, 351 grams for those interested in other units.
