If I remember correctly,a lady known as Grandma Gatewood was the first person to hike the Appalachian Trail in it's entirety? She
wore either Keds or PF Flyers, not sure which, but she used an old shower curtain as a tarp.I think I read that somewhere.

Wow, I guess if it was big enough it would work!

I stand corrected-she wore Converse sneakers but did carry an army blanket and a shower curtain.Thru hiked the AT 1955,1960,and 1963.She did recommend Keds,a rain cape, and an over the shoulder bag.here's a link but there was no mention of what kind of shower curtain or it's dimensions.I'm going to guess most shower curtains are about 78x84 inches at the most.Anyone know?

Good reminder of how wrapped up we can all tend to get in how "good" our gear is. I thoroughly enjoy that she wore Chucks, those are some of my favorite shoes but definitely not what I would think of as a good hiking shoe, pretty awesome. Pretty much all the shower curtains I have looked at are about that size, I'm sure that nowadays you could find something bigger online though.
