Hi all, newbie hanger here. Got started from Heavyhiker (here on HF), a fellow Scout leader, and my son. I've been scouring the forums for info on cold weather hanging, as I'm scheduled to tackle a piece of the AT next weekend, and would much rather hang than ground camp. Tried hanging in my backyard on Thanksgiving weekend, with no UQ, didn't work so well. I'm going to try a modified old sleeping bag for first UQ, hopefully that'll help...going to try it out in the backyard tonight, due to get down to a balmy 35.
Current gear is: ENO DoubleNest, ENO Atlas suspension, WUP Bird tarp, 20º sleeping bag UQ, 20º sleeping bag for TQ, REI Flash insulated air pad
And already I've got 1,001 ideas on changing things, like suspension, better UQ/TQ, all, of course time and $$ dependent.
Taking a crew of Scouts to Philmont, NM this summer (with Heavyhiker), hoping to hike all of the AT in NJ before then for warmup, maybe part/most of NY also. Unfortunately, Boy Scouts don't allow hammocks at Philmont, too many come through in a season, they don't want to damage trees. So it'll be back to sleeping on the hard ground for that trip.
