Talking Saying Hello From Harrisburg, PA and could use some beginner advice.

    Hello Everyone,

I have been an avid reader of everyone's insight here for awhile and took the plunge on getting a hammock. After a decent amount of research I decided on the Eno CamoNest XL with MalloMe 12 foot loop straps. I know that the Eno is considered a gateway drug hammock till you upgrade to something like a WB but I was not even sure that I would get into the whole scene. A buddy of mine and I are completing the entire Susquehanna River on the East Coast. It is 444 miles long. So far we have tent camped either on islands that were primitive or actual DCNR campsites. Due to the middle section from NY down there is very little tent places. The hammock makes it a breeze to set up on the shallow banks and smaller islands the tent could not work on. So enough about me in that regard, I have several questions and if they have been answered or addressed other areas I apologize.
-If I wanted a removable Ridgeline (with carabiners) which cord to use? I hear about AmSteel and others... anything but para cord because it stretches, right? What are the top cords for this?
    - I don't have a bug-net yet. I was thinking of soaking my clothes in Permethrin. I will probably break down and buy one but are there any cheaper alternatives?
-Tarps... I was thinking of starting with a Harbor Fright camo tarp because if it gets messed up on this trip and others its 8 bucks. Thoughts?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Please note I know I can replace mostly everything from carabiners to cord and get whoopie slings and all of that. I would like to use the current system I have and adapt from there to start. So Thanks!!!!

Hello and welcome from Marietta GA. I'll try to answer your questions. It seems like you'll be paddling, so weight doesn't seem to be as much of an issue as it would if backpacking.

Ridgeline- many hammockers use 1.75mm lash-it/zing-it for this. Lightweight and strong. Also spliceable, so you could make it adjustable and leave the carabiners at home or use them for something else.

Bug net- you can get a "fronkey" style bug net pretty inexpensively from some of the cottage vendors on this site, or if so inclined sew your own with a ready-made kit available at Ripstop by the Roll. Bug defense is more effective as a layered approach, so some permethrin for your clothes won't hurt either.

Tarp- I'm not familiar with the Harbor Freight tarp, just make sure you test it out before relying on it out in the wilds.

Good luck on your trip and happy hanging!

Thanks for the advice John! Much appreciated. I just picked up The Ultimate Hang 2 book as well... Hopefully I can become as versed as some of the people in this forum.

After you solve CRP and CBS, the rest is gravy
If you get Calf Ridge Pressure, watch Shug's videos on this common affliction---watch it twice or three times. And consider for your comfort a hammock 11 feet long and since your hammock is wide maybe get width five and a half feet wide or more.
We've all gotten Cold Butt Syndrome at least once---and Shug has great intel on his videos covering insulation both pads and quilts.
Attend at least two local group hangs to get loads of hammock information and meet hammockers near you.
Good luck on your rivers---scenic camping at its finest

Welcome to the Forum. I second the vote to use zing it/lash it for your ridge line, although I also have a set up with blue Amsteel. If you follow the general rule of making your ridge line 83% of the length of your hammock, that will enable you to get into the ballpark range of a very comfortable sag in your hammock. Once you figure out the correct length for your ridge line, you can set it and forget it! And there is nothing wrong with attaching that ridge lie to the hammock with a couple of regular carabiners. I still use them unless I'm counting grams, in which case I'll substitute a couple of Dutchware biners.
Good luck in your ambitious float down the entire Susquehanna River!

Welcome! Look in the trips section in the Northeast area and check out the MAHHA Spring hang in April. You should go to that!! You learn a TON at these group hangs about gear. It is right round the corner from you.

Howdy and welcome from No. VA. You might like to review the stickies at the top of each of the HF sub sections. There is a lot of good data there. Again welcome
