I can never get over the fact of carrying a tarp and not using it so I usually make an attempt to put it up but if its super dark I may jump on that band wagon.

No problem. They are fairly cheap if you want to try them. I used them with a Dutch Biner for my hammock with a continuous loop suspension.

I worry about looking for hammock sites and also hiking with ppl that tent.

Still, I’ve found Shug’s method kind of a pain. I just lay in the hammock without attaching it to the poles. Faster and just as uncomfortable.

You can hammock so much of the desert that I would really encourage you to do so if you love hammocking. Even with other hikers that are tenting, rarely would you be unable to sleep near them.

Someone wondered about other hammockers on the PCT - We met 1 other hammocker in 2016. In 2012, 0. They could have been out there, but I didn't see them.

Good luck to you guys this summer. With low snow, the Sierra Nevada should be more pleasant than it was for the 2017ers.

I have been overloaded with naysayers about hammocking the first part but once I heard a few people(actual PCT thru hikers) say that its doable my decision was made. With the quality of sleep I get in a hammock versus on the ground even with the best equipment its more than worth it to me to give it a try. I still have a tent in my closet but I'm not even sure I know how to set it up anymore. I will let you guys know how it works out for me but with the intel I am getting I am looking forward to a positive experience hammocking the whole way!

That's the spirit! Boo to the naysayers. Even if you have to be a bit more selective with your camp sites, you will sleep so much better than your ground dwelling counterparts!

Keep a log of the GPS coordinates for your hanging spots to consider posting once you finish your desert section; information like that might be valuable for future hikers if there are any long stretches where anchor points are few and far between.

+1. I'm surprised this was the first I heard of them. I like the looks of these an may give them a try.

Makes me happy to hear a firsthand account of hammocking on the PCT. The PCT seems like it would be more for me than the AT but I won't hike for 4 months unless I can bed down in my hammock.
