Getting another night in the hammock. Temp is currently 16 degrees F . It's supposed to get down to around 7. I will let you all know how it goes and get current set up picks tomarrow .
That’s a great idea that works
And a Gossamer Gear closed cell foam pad maybe 1/8 or 3/16 thick 40 inches wide and 70 or 72 inches long. This will wrap around and block wind keeping you warm until you can get a full length zero degree down underquilt. And if it’s really cold—-you can use a pad and underquilt and Shug’s technique below—-all three simultaneously
And Shug, in extreme cold camping has rigged a large sleeping bag pea pod style around his entire hammock
Spring time will be here soon

It got down to three degrees last night. Unfortunately it was too cold for the gear I have. So I think this is the end of my trying to get out in teens and single digits until I get my new gear.
Gear is always fun to tweak and adjust, endlessly. Part of the appeal of hammock camping.
I know I was extremely leery of my setup until I spent enough nights in the backwoods and in the big woods hanging in the cold weather. So many ways to add a few degrees here, there, everywhere. Don't focus on just one item. Look at all the pieces that could be changed to add comfort, warmth, wind resistance to your setup. Like clothing, hammock warmth is a layering issue against the cold/wind/moisture. Just wearing more clothes adds quite a bit to warmth.
It takes practice to get comfortable, in the cold, in the hammock. My solution involved multiple changes to make my personal best of neg 8* warm, with a 20mph wind. Small, less expensive changes might let you get down farther than you would believe. Keep practicing....

I couldn't have said what Gregori did any better.
Practice, practice and more practice. Building your confidence level goes a long way in helping with your comfort level. I highly doubt that you'll find anyone on this forum who hasn't had a bad night out in the woods.
The link is to the set up I was using last night tarp is higher so I could take pictures of inside of the hammock.
Ok so I added a,therm-a-rest trail lite sleeping pad. And a - 5 degree bag as a pod
Sounds much warmer already, add a layer of clothing and a hot water bottle and you should be fine even a little under 0*F.
Add some wind breaks/blocks on both ends of the tarp, possibly just pickup a simple larger tarp and close the ends for doors. No need to get fancy when you're learning / trying things out. Once you see a bunch of different setups at a group hang you should have a better idea of what you might want longer term. Besides some down quilts....
Keep Hanging!!
