Looking to go over to Austin, Tx this spring for a vacation and some Central Texas BBQ but this Georgia boy is looking for places to backpack in and hang a hammock overnight. Any help from the Austin Texas crowd would greatly be appreciated.

You might consider Lost Maples State Park, Pedernales Falls State Park or maybe Garner State Park.
Thanks for the reply. I was checking out some of those areas earlier today. The closest was about an hour outside Austin. The other 2 are about 3 hours away. I was hoping to find something inside 30 minutes of the area so I could go into town and do the tourist & bbq thing in the day and hammock camp at night. If you see of anything else closer, please let me know. Thanks again.
Lake Goodwin probably isn't any closer but it's free.actually maps says tejas camp is 45 min away
Oh and most free camping spots are about 5 miles in but there's one that's 2 miles.
Oops it's lake Georgetown good water loop.
https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/mckinney-falls might be a possibility? I have never been there. However, the TX frozen butt hang was just there this past weekend.
How about Bastrop State Park? Don't know much about it but it's east of Austin 35-40 miles.
McKinney Falls State Park is between Austin Bergstrom airport and I35 on the south side of town. We just had our 4th annual Texas Frozen Butt hang there and they were very accommodating to hammock campers.
* Sorry, misread the OP and responded to "Camping" not "backpacking".
+1 on Goodwater Trail around Lake Georgetown.
