What is the span between trees?
How high are the tree straps?
Is the foot end 12"-18" higher?
The ridgeline should flex like this when you have your weight in it.

Also, that space where your UQ is not covering....are you using a secondary suspension?
"...in Florida, she felt air conditioning for the first time, and it was cold and unnatural upon her skin."
Having been to a group hang, but get the ultimate hang app for your phone. It'll help you immensely with setup.
A tight ridge line is a result of short suspension.
The magic 30 degree slope of your suspension will get your ridge line right and give you a better lay.
The ultimate hang app has a calculator, or you can download a free inclinometer app for your phone that will help.
Now go inside and get some sleep.

Just check the trip planning forum, specifically under the Midwest sub-forum, which will list Indiana, MI, IL, etc. Events are happening all the time.
More big hangs planned and many impromptu small gatherings run throughout the year. April has another planned hang south of Bloomington. And then at Halloween time is also another regularly scheduled/annual event. 20- 40 hangers typically, at either hang. Several spots in the HNF are regulared by the gang. Lots of gear and laughs.
Michigan and other nearby states, host group hangs. All good people and family friendly. (with some adult cheer also). Some are car camping where you can bring it ALL. Others are pack in only, where need your own water and food. Show up for the day and check out the gear varieties. Or stay for the whole weekend? Nobody's schedule works for all the hangs. Just hit the ones that jive with yours. Or start your own at your favorite woods, or home/property?
More than just hammocks. The food (can you say ALL DAY BUFFET, lol), the fires, and the never-ending gear talk and assortment, is enlightening and entertaining.
As for the tight RL, you need to raise your straps. Once you get the straps at the right angle, the rl will tension properly.
Your at home tree spacing may not be good. I used a ladder just to make a 30' span work for me. I just left those straps hanging high for at home fiddling, which if IIRC, was 12'-15' up. Then attached any other hammock's suspension to them.
Hint-Leave some slack in the RL at set up. Then rest your body weight into the hammock. Check your RL. Adjust. Re-adjust. You may need to raise or lower the attachment height, lengthen the suspension, etc., etc. to get things dialed in. After several tries, it will be right. And from then on, you will be able to gauge the heights and angles and Pre-load RL tightness better. It will take some practice and adjusting. Each trip is a new learning experience.
UQ sliding-. It may be cinched TOO tight or narrow? Both on the main suspension and the head/foot end of the quilt's width (draft-collar area) shock cords? Lay in the hammock and have a helper outside the hammock adjust the suspensions and widths till you are happy. You want it to seal out the drafts, but also flex with your body.
Most cottage quilts and hammocks have a tie off so you can better situate the quilt and keep it place on/near your shoulder. Some folks sew a webbing loop to the quilt and hammock, making a DIY fix, if the hammock or quilt do not already have this. Placement is normally near the head side in which you prefer. This will keep the quilt in place, and prevent sliding off, yet allow the main suspension to stretch. Simple enough.
There are also other methods where you re-arrange the quilts suspension UP over the hammocks RL slightly, thus changing the angles and helps keep the quilt in place. Lots of tricks out there. We are all different sizes and shapes. Experiment. Find the ONE that works for you.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
Thanks everyone! I appreciate the input!

No specific suggestions, but you were setting up under difficult conditions as a trial. If you could have planned a day test (tough to do with kids), you would have had time to fiddle with it more.
Here is all my UQ intel.....hope it may help some. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...mBYSPGHjdyGqsL
